South County Hospital Offers Minimally Invasive Approach to Repair Hip Impingement

What is Hip Impingement?

Hip impingement occurs when there is abnormal contact in your hip joint between the ball  and the socket . This affects the hip joint's range of motion. It also causes pain and a loss of mobility. It is frequently experienced by younger, more athletic individuals, but it is not exclusive to youth; many individuals are diagnosed in middle-age. Fortunately, treatment is not limited by one's age.

A Common Problem, Commonly Misdiagnosed

Studies show that hip impingement regularly goes undiagnosed (or is misdiagnosed), for two years before a correct diagnosis is made. Often, patients are told they have a lower back problem. An orthopedic doctor specializing in sports medicine is best able to diagnose the condition, and specially trained to recommend treatment options.

Symptoms

Hip impingement can cause pain in the hip joint itself, but the pain can also be located in the lower back, groin, buttock, and even the knee. The pain can range from a dull ache to a sharp pain. The discomfort gets worse during athletic activity, or prolonger sitting. A sensation of stiffness in the hip, or a clicking or catching feeling are also common symptoms.

What is Causing the Pain?

The abnormal contact between the ball and socket in the hip can cause pinching and tearing of the labrum (the tissue that acts as a cushion between the two). The cartilage can also be damaged by the constant shear taking place in the joint. Inflammation, caused by cartilage or labral debris, also causes pain in the hip joint. And, the sensation of pain can radiate to the back, groin, or even the knee.

What Causes Hip Impingement?

There are a number of causes for hip impingement: traumatic injury; childhood disease; a previous hip surgery; or a congenital or developmental origin. The onset of symptoms can occur at any age.

Treatment Options

Treatment for hip impingement can be as simple as a period of doctor-prescribed physical therapy, all the way to a surgical repair. When the most basic approaches have not resulted in the desired improvement, a minimally invasive procedure called hip arthroscopy is an option (see video below). Orthopedic surgeons from South County Orthopedics & Physical Therapy specializing in sports medicine will be able to determine the best approach based on a physical exam, an assessment of the person's health history, and diagnostic imaging such as X-ray.

Hip Arthroscopy–minimally invasive procedure can spare the joint from further damage. If indicated, hip arthroscopy can not only improve mobility but also spare the hip joint from further degeneration. The procedure is done laparoscopically, with 2 small incisions, and on an out-patient basis.
