South County Hospital was the first medical facility in Rhode Island to offer the FDA-approved BIRMINGHAM HIP Resurfacing System as an alternative to total hip replacement. Our southern Rhode Island facility offers hip resurfacing, which shaves and caps a few centimeters of bone within the joint, a much less invasive process than total hip replacement.

What this means for you is less likelihood of post-operative dislocation and inaccurate leg length. Also the implant's cobalt chrome material has the potential to last longer than traditional hip implants.

Are You a Candidate for Hip Resurfacing?

Generally, hip resurfacing is ideal for individuals who live active lifestyles and for whom total hip replacement may not be needed due to the quality and density of their bones.  This is determined during a consultation with a physician of South County Orthopedics & Physical Therapy.
