Computed Tomography, referred to as CT or CAT scan, uses special x-ray equipment to obtain multiple images from different angles, which are processed by computer to show a cross-section of body tissues and organs. Each year, the Diagnostic Imaging Center at South County Hospital performs thousands of CT studies.

Your CT exams are performed by certified technologists and interpreted by Board Certified radiologists. If, after scheduling your CT scan, you have questions, call 401 788-1486.

The goal of screening is to reduce the number of people who die from the disease. By detecting the disease early, it is easier to treat with minimal harm to those who are screened using low-dose computed tomography (CT) scan.

To be a candidate for lung screening, you must meet all of the following requirements:
  • 55 to 77 years old
  • A smoker or a person who quit smoking less than 15 years ago.
  • Have a smoking history of at least 30 pack-years. (One pack year is equal to smoking 20 cigarettes, or one pack, every day for one year.)
  • Have no new symptoms that could be related to lung cancer
  • Be healthy enough to tolerate curative intent treatment for early stage lung cancer
  • Have not had a chest CT in the last 12 months

If eligible, ask your doctor to schedule you for the lung cancer screening.

South County Hospital's MRI suite is designed for your comfort and staffed by some of the most experienced technologists in the state. MRI

The latest in MRI technology: How it works

MRI uses radio waves and a strong magnetic field, rather than x-rays, to provide clear and detailed pictures of internal organs and tissue. The technique is used in diagnosis of a broad range of conditions, including cancer, heart and vascular disease and stroke, as well as joint and musculoskeletal disorders. Among the most common are MRI scans of the brain, upper extremities, lower joints and the spine (cervical, thoracic and lumbar).

Your MRI exams are performed by certified technologists and interpreted by Board Certified radiologists. If, after having scheduled your MRI, you have questions, call 401 788-1444.

South County Health boasts the latest in MRI technology--the Siemans Magnetom Aera MRI machine, located at the hospital's main campus and the Medical & Wellness Center in Westerly. It is considered to be a top-of-the-line system in its class.

Among the benefits to patients:

  • Faster. A scan takes approximately 25 minutes, compared to other, older machines that can take 45 minutes.
  • Comfort. Many scans can now be administered “feet first,” an advantage for people who feel confined in traditional “head first” systems.
  • Capacity. Patient weight limit is 500lbs.
  • Less noise. Patients will not be subjected to the “banging” associated with traditional MRIs.

In addition, patients with compatible, MRI conditional cardiac pacemakers will be able to have MRI exams when needed. Breast MRI and biopsies and prostate scans are also be available.

Nuclear medicine is a radiologic subspecialty of diagnostic examinations that provides images of body anatomy and functioning. The images are developed based on the detection of energy emitted from a radioactive substance given to the patient. Each year, the Outpatient Diagnostic Imaging Center performs thousands of nuclear medicine examinations. Among the most common nuclear medicine tests are the whole body scan, bone scan, thyroid imaging and uptake, as well as renal and liver function scans.

Your nuclear medicine examinations are performed by certified technologists and interpreted by Board Certified radiologists. If, after having scheduled your nuclear medicine test, you have questions, call 401 788-1444.

Our Center performs thousands of ultrasound studies each year, most commonly for obstetrical, pelvic, breast, and abdominal conditions. All sonographers are ARDMS certified.
