HELP at South County Health: A Model of Dementia-Sensitive Hospital Care

How a small grant is transforming outcomes for seniors in our community.

In South Kingstown, 24.2% of residents are over 65—and many are vulnerable to Alzheimer’s or other forms of cognitive decline. South County Health is proud to be a leader in addressing their needs through the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP)—a national care model tailored to reduce delirium, promote mobility, and improve outcomes for hospitalized seniors.

Thanks to a $2,370 grant from Ocean State Charities Trust, our team purchased weighted wraps, lap pads, sensory kits, and stuffed animals—items that might seem simple but are incredibly powerful for patients living with dementia.

One recent patient, often confused and crying, found comfort through fidget items and the consistent care of our interdisciplinary team. When she worried aloud about a pet cat, our social workers made sure the cat was safe and kept her informed—again and again—with patience and kindness.

Since implementing the program:

  • Staff have more tools to de-escalate anxiety and redirect patients.
  • Family members report gratitude and relief.
  • Care is more personalized, empathetic, and effective.

With growing interest in geriatric certifications, volunteer training, and community partnerships, South County Health is committed to expanding HELP and continuing to meet the needs of our aging population.
