Laurie's nomination mentioned both her extraordinary compassion and clinical excellence.

A Moment of Light in the Midst of Grief

During a time of deep sorrow, one nurse stood out—not just for her clinical skill, but for her ability to comfort a grieving family with presence, patience, and compassion. Laurie Robert, RN, a dedicated nurse in the Ortho/Frost 1 department, has been named a DAISY Award recipient following a heartfelt nomination submitted by Maria Cullati.

The DAISY Award is a national recognition program that honors the extraordinary skill and compassion nurses provide every day. South County Health presented Laurie with the award during Employee & Nurses Week, a time devoted to celebrating healthcare workers.

"An Angel to All of Us"

Maria Cullati’s nomination recounts the emotionally charged final days of her loved one, Eddie DeFalco, who passed away from pancreatic cancer. A large, diverse group of family and friends surrounded Eddie—each coping in their own way. Laurie, Maria says, was “an angel to all of us.”

“She brought a gentle calm energy whenever she floated into the room,” Maria wrote. “She practiced the art of nursing for Eddie and with each one of us.”

Laurie’s care extended beyond Eddie to his loved ones, who described feeling truly seen and supported. From remembering their names to patiently answering questions and explaining each step of care, Laurie became more than a nurse—she became part of the family’s journey.

“Just like Eddie, Laurie has a place in our hearts,” the nomination reads. “She earned it by extending herself beyond the expected role that she was assigned.”

Recognizing Excellence in Nursing

Anitra L. Galmore, DNP, BSN RN, MS, NEA-BC, South County Health Vice President & Chief Operations Officer/Chief Nursing Officer shared her appreciation for Laurie’s work and the broader contributions of the nursing staff.

“Laurie is an outstanding example of what it means to be a nurse at South County Health,” said Galmore. “She brings not only clinical excellence but true compassion and presence. Her ability to connect with patients and families in their most vulnerable moments is what sets her apart.”

Galmore added, “Stories like these are powerful reminders of the impact our nurses have—not just in delivering care, but in providing comfort, dignity, and hope.”

A Lasting Impact

Eddie DeFalco’s family will remember many things about their loved one—his wisdom, his humor, his dancing, and his deep love for life. But they will also remember Laurie Robert: a nurse who made a difference when it mattered most.
