South County Health is proud to announce Regina (Gina) Machado, Patient Care Technician in the Med Surge Unit, as the latest recipient of the Petal Award. This recognition highlights Gina's exceptional dedication to patient care, as reflected in the heartfelt nomination from one of her patients’ family members, Carol Czaia.
A Family Member’s Gratitude: Carol’s Story
Carol’s husband was a patient on the Med Surge Unit, and during a particularly difficult night, she experienced firsthand the compassion and attentiveness that Gina brings to her role. Carol shared: "When Gina walked into my husband's room in the hospital, she exuded confidence and efficiency. It was just what I needed as a spouse who was afraid of what was happening medically to my husband and who was exhausted from lack of sleep. While life seemed to be spinning out of control for me that night, Gina appeared. She knew just how to create a sense of order and physical comfort for my husband, but the care I most want to recognize was her response to my exhaustion. While I was dashing home to get some clothes ready for another night sleeping in the hospital room, Gina made up a bed for me. It brought tears of gratitude to my eyes when I saw how she'd put clean sheets and pillows and a heavy cotton blanket on not a recliner but a convertible single bed."
Carol’s acknowledgment highlights Gina’s remarkable ability to see and respond not only to patients’ needs but also to those of caregivers, demonstrating empathy, humility, and professionalism in every interaction.
