A new staff parking lot will be coming soon, freeing up an additional 57 spots closer to the hospital providing patients and visitors more convenient access to care.

South County Health has purchased the property at 11 Kenyon Avenue, located at the intersection of Kenyon Avenue and Salt Pond Road. We are developing this site into a new staff parking lot, fully funded by a generous gift from an anonymous, grateful patient. This remarkable gift exemplifies how donor support enhances the care experiences at South County Health. helping free up closer spaces for our patients and visitors.

South County Health has successfully petitioned the Town of South Kingstown to rezone the property from commercial to Government and Institutional (GI). The GI zoning permits a hospital parking lot to be developed. We need additional approvals from the Town relating to the plan and design, but we hope to start demolition and construction in the near future. In the meantime, we're pleased to share details about the project:

  • The lot will provide approximately 57 parking spaces for day-shift employees and student workers, helping to free up closer, more convenient parking for patients and visitors.
  • Since 2022, we have added 81 new parking spots, including this project and those created last year with the removal of the "shed".
  • Estimated time for completion is 5-6 months once construction begins.
  • A new pedestrian crosswalk on Kenyon Avenue will offer a safe route for employees walking to the Hospital.
  • Vehicle access will only be permitted from Salt Pond Road to reduce traffic on Kenyon Avenue.
  • "Dark-sky" lighting will minimize impact on neighbors.
  • Highly respected landscape architect Don Leighton has designed the landscaping to make the new parking lot visually appealing.

We’re grateful to the Town of South Kingstown and local neighbors for their collaboration including feedback on landscaping, noise and light mitigation, environmental protections, and safety measures. Their input has been instrumental in shaping the final plan, and with their support, we’re building a more accessible, patient-friendly campus—one step at a time.

As parking on the main hospital campus continues to be limited, particularly during peak hours and busy seasons, this expansion will reduce congestion and improve access by dispersing parking across a broader footprint of the hospital campus. In particular, patients visiting the Medical Office Building and other areas of our main campus, including oncology, orthopedic, obstetrics, and mobility-impaired patients will have more convenient access to care.

Looking ahead, plans are also being finalized for a new walking path on the hospital campus, and we will provide updates as that project moves forward.
