June is Cancer Survivorship Month. Phil's story is a reminder that hope, expert care, community support and prayer can make all the difference.

When Phil first noticed swelling in his legs in November 2022, cancer was the furthest thing from his mind. But after seeking care through his primary care provider, he received life-changing news: he had aggressive cancer.

Throughout his treatment, Phil has received care at the Cancer Center at South County Health, where he credits every member of the team with helping him navigate this chapter of his life.

"The caring team at South County Health starts out front at registration," Phil says. "Everyone always has a big smile. The physicians, nurses, pharmacists, of course, they are all integral, but every single member of staff I've interacted with has been part of my care."

Confidence in Care

From the beginning, Phil's oncologist, Christopher Seidler, MD, worked to ensure he felt confident in every step of his treatment plan.

Three years into the process, Dr. Seidler referred Phil to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston for a second opinion. After reviewing his case, the specialists there agreed completely with the treatment strategy already in place.

For Phil and his wife, Sarah, the experience provided reassurance and peace of mind.

"It confirmed for us that we were already getting outstanding care," Phil says. "You don't have to drive to Boston to receive world-class cancer treatment."

That confidence has remained important as Phil's treatment has evolved. Today, Dr. Seidler and the Cancer Center team are guiding Phil through another course of treatment, continuing to adapt and explore options while keeping him focused on living life fully.

The Power of Community

While medical care has been essential, Phil says another source of strength has come from the people surrounding him.

He credits the unwavering support of Sarah, along with family, friends, and members of the community and Christ the King Parish who have followed his journey and offered encouragement along the way.

One tool that has helped connect those supporters is CaringBridge, an online platform that allows patients and families to share updates with loved ones.

Most important has been his faith.

"I truly believe in the power of prayer," he says.

Looking Ahead

Cancer has changed many aspects of Phil's life, but it hasn't changed his determination to keep looking forward.

This summer, he and Sarah are planning a getaway to Block Island, one of their favorite places. They enjoy visiting early in the season, before the crowds arrive and while the island remains quiet and peaceful.

It's a trip they're looking forward to—not because it marks an end to treatment, but because it represents something equally important: continuing to make memories and enjoy life's meaningful moments.

For others facing a cancer diagnosis, Phil offers simple but powerful advice.

"Hang tough," he says.

While every cancer journey is unique, Phil’s experience is a reminder that hope can be found in the people, places, and moments that help carry us forward.
