Though healthcare might run in her family—her mother is a nurse—Katelyn Johnson, MD didn’t initially envision a career in medicine. She earned her undergraduate degree in psychology and spent a few years exploring her next steps. A suggestion from her sister-in-law, an obstetrician, inspired her to consider medical school. That decision led her to complete a post-baccalaureate program and take the necessary science prerequisites—a leap that would ultimately define her career.

“I didn’t know at the time that I wanted to specialize in urology,” Dr. Johnson recalls. It wasn’t until she joined a Women in Medicine group during medical school that she found her path. There, she met Leslie M. Rickey, MD, MPH, a urologist at Yale, who would become a mentor and guide her toward the field. “I was inspired by the technical skill set I was learning and my desire to master it,” Dr. Johnson says. Over time, the motivation shifted: today, it’s the vulnerability and gratitude of her patients that inspires her most.

Leadership, Respect, and Collaboration

For Dr. Johnson, leadership is rooted in respect—for herself, for colleagues, and for every member of the care team. “No one is above working in the trenches,” she says. She strives to communicate needs calmly, even in high-stakes situations, though she notes that as a mother, maintaining that calm can be easier in the OR than at home. Her philosophy emphasizes collaboration and mentorship, reflecting a belief that healthcare is built on the lineage of knowledge passed from one generation to the next.

“I encourage anyone considering a career in medicine to cultivate support networks and mentors,” she says. “Part of this field is sharing information and expertise. People are excited to help.” Equally important, she stresses the need for self-care, which for Dr. Johnson means running and swimming.

Pioneering in Urology and Embracing Innovation

Dr. Johnson specializes in urology and urologic surgery, including techniques like Aquablation and da Vinci robotic procedures. While she is enthusiastic about technology and open to innovation, she emphasizes that tools and AI can never replace empathy and clinical decision-making. Her work in a community hospital gives her a unique, intimate perspective into patients’ lives—an experience she calls humbling and motivating.

Mentorship and Reflection

Reflecting on her career, Dr. Johnson expresses gratitude for the women who came before her and the colleagues and mentors who shaped her path. She recognizes the challenges and progress women have made in medicine and hopes to be able to support the next generation of clinicians.

“What continues to inspire me is the patient connection,” she says. “It’s humbling to be trusted in those vulnerable moments. That’s the impact I’m most proud of.”

Dr. Katelyn Johnson’s journey—from post-baccalaureate student to skilled urologist—demonstrates that curiosity, mentorship, and empathy are as vital as technical skill in medicine. Her leadership, dedication, and compassion reflect the best of what healthcare can offer.
