Jessica Mailloux, RN: A Nurse Who Changed the Course of a Birth
For first-time parents, pregnancy often brings a mix of excitement, uncertainty, and fear. When Alex O’Connor went in for what was supposed to be a routine 38-week non-stress test, she met a nurse who would change everything: Jessica Mailloux, RN.
Jessica’s vigilance and compassion turned what could have been a traumatic experience into one of safety, reassurance, and ultimately, life-saving care.
“She Was My Anchor”
During the appointment, Jess noticed Alex’s blood pressure was unusually high. She acted immediately—rechecking, alerting the midwife on call, and arranging lab work.
“I was there alone, scared and unprepared,” Alex recalled. “Jess’s calm, steady presence was my anchor.”
When the lab results indicated likely preeclampsia, Jess sat with Alex, explained each step, and guided her through calling her husband to tell him their baby would be arriving sooner than expected.
Compassion Through Every Step
Complications arose, and the decision was made to move forward with a c-section. Terrified, Alex leaned on Jess’s steady presence once again.
“She was even in the OR as I delivered my baby boy,” Alex said. “Jess stayed with him so that my husband could sit by me and hold my hand.”
Throughout an extended hospital stay, Jess continued to check in on the new family—always attentive, reassuring, and compassionate.
A Nurse Who Made All the Difference
“Jess’s vigilance and dedication meant that our beautiful son is here with us today,” Alex wrote. “Had she not looked deeper into my high blood pressure that day, the outcome could have been so different. Words cannot fully express the gratitude my husband and I feel. We owe so much to Jess and we know she embodies everything the DAISY Award stands for.”
