Honoring Nearly 25 Years on the “Night Patrol”
At South County Health, excellence in care extends beyond what patients see during the day. Behind the scenes—especially at night—dedicated professionals like Richard Giampietro play a vital role in keeping our hospital running smoothly. With nearly 25 years on the third shift, Richard’s experience, leadership, and technical expertise have made him an integral part of the laboratory team and a valued colleague to many.
A Path from Oceanography to Laboratory Science
"I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science from the University of Rhode Island," Richard shares. "Advice, well—I went to URI to be an Oceanographer at first, then realized something more practical might be a better choice. So, being a Clinical Laboratory Scientist is common ground between science and a paycheck, and I've enjoyed my career since."
Starting at South County Health
"I started as a per diem employee, while working full-time at Pawtucket Memorial Hospital. A friend/fellow URI grad was working here and asked if I wanted to do some per diem shifts. I agreed, and in 2000 started here."
He continues, "My schedule at PMH was Sunday night through Thursday night each week, and I was looking to make a change after a number of years. The lab manager here at the time was the past Chemistry supervisor at PMH and offered me an opportunity for a better schedule, full time here. So, in December of 2002 I started here full time on 3rd shift. The only other major change since was in 2006 when we switched to our current schedule of 7 on, 7 off in the laboratory."
Growth and Technical Expertise
Richard notes how his role has continued to evolve: "From a technical perspective, the lab has sent me to attend school for the last 3 Chemistry analyzer upgrades, as we do much of the maintenance on 3rd shift, as well as the testing. In addition, from a personal perspective, my schedule has been the biggest benefit."
A Unique Schedule, A Fulfilling Life
"The short answer to why I've been here for almost 25 years has been my schedule. It has allowed me to not only stay on 3rd shift most of my career, but partake in life outside of work, fully, while working full-time."
He adds, "The longer answer is that I enjoy working here on the night patrol, and have worked with many wonderful, caring people over the years. 3rd shift is a different entity entirely. It's not just about being able to do the work, it's about can you do the lifestyle. Thankfully, I have been able to. Whether it was school activities, sports activities or family activities, I never really had to miss anything, just sleep...."
Looking Ahead—and Giving Back
"I'm not sure about a future position—the next may be retirement...lol. However, we have implemented many new changes/instruments in the lab recently, and to master all of them is always my goal."
Outside the Lab: Life on the Trails and Ice
"My immediate family includes my wife Linda, our two daughters, Lauren and Leah, and our dog Brinkley. I love to hike—lots of local hikes with Brinkley—but last fall I finally finished hiking all 48 4,000-ft mountains in New Hampshire. I play hockey a couple of times per week, partake in trivia night every other Thursday with friends, and more recently, help out our parents with whatever they may need."
A Lasting Legacy of Quiet Dedication
South County Health is proud to recognize the steady contributions of team members like Richard Giampietro. Through years of service—often when the rest of the community is asleep—Richard has helped ensure high-quality, uninterrupted lab services and offered mentorship, stability, and professionalism to his colleagues. Whether he's maintaining advanced chemistry analyzers or hiking 4,000-foot peaks, Richard’s commitment, both on and off shift, is an inspiration.
