Honoring the Heart of Our Community During National Volunteer Week
April brings a sense of renewal to South County, longer days, brighter mornings, and a fresh energy that makes it the perfect backdrop for National Volunteer Week. It’s a time to recognize the extraordinary individuals who give their time, compassion, and dedication to our patients, families, and staff.
At South County Health, volunteers are essential to our mission. Their presence strengthens our community in ways both seen and deeply felt. This month, we celebrate them—the hours you give, the smiles you share, and the steady commitment you bring to our hospital and practices.
While Volunteer Week may last only a few days, their impact is felt every single day at SCH.
April's Volunteer of the Month

As we celebrate Volunteer Week, it feels especially fitting to shine a light on someone who truly embodies the heart of service at South County Health. This month, we are proud to honor Bruce Renner, who has been volunteering with us since 2009 and continues to make an extraordinary impact every time he puts on his badge.
Recently, a patient shared a message that perfectly captures why Bruce is so special:
“I had the absolute pleasure of sitting with volunteer Bruce this morning outside the lab. I am a first-time mom who had to take a three-hour glucose test. It was not a fun process, and I felt pretty awful. But in between blood draws, I was able to sit with Bruce for hours, and it made all the difference.
It was great to speak with him and not be alone, and it was really nice watching him greet all the patients entering the building. He has so many relationships and made a point to connect with everyone who walked in. He is a volunteer who loves what he does and has so much to teach about life.
Never did I think at 29 years old that I would find a friend in a 98-year-old, but I look forward to seeing Bruce again and truly value his presence in your hospital system.”
Stories like this remind us why Volunteer Week matters. It is a moment to pause and recognize the people who bring warmth, humanity, and connection to our halls—people like Bruce. For more than 15 years, Bruce has been a steady, joyful presence at SCH. His kindness radiates, his conversations uplift, and his dedication inspires. He has a remarkable ability to make every person feel seen, valued, and cared for.
As we honor all volunteers this month, we extend a special thank you to Bruce for reminding us what a difference one person can make. It is our honor to recognize Bruce Renner as South County Health’s Volunteer of the Month for April.
