Onboarding Process for Volunteering
Before you start, you must complete the Volunteer Services’ onboarding process, which includes a background screening, medical clearance, proof of influenza vaccinations, and other compliance documents.
The onboarding process varies depending on whether you are an adult volunteer, student volunteer, or intern. There is also an orientation session for all new volunteers.
In order to volunteer at South County Hospital you must complete the following:
Attend an informational session, held at 3:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month in the Potter Conference Center at South County Hospital. Information sessions are not held in January or July. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Informational Sessions are held via Zoom. A link will be sent to the email address you provided on your application. Space is limited
Submit an application with references (a reference must not be from a family member)
Interview with the Volunteer Services Department
Submit appropriate onboarding documents
Complete online orientation
Serve a minimum of three to four hours each week for a minimum of six months (if you volunteer during the summer, you may serve a minimum of three to four hours twice a week for three months.)
If you are under age 18, submit a signed permission slip.
Adhere to uniform and dress code policy
Participate in a criminal background check, if over the age of 18
High school students have many volunteer opportunities at South County Hospital and are an important part of our volunteer team. Whether you're looking to gain experience in healthcare or give back to your community, you'll be performing interesting and meaningful work. We welcome Student Volunteers (age 16 or older).

Summer Volunteer Program South County Hospital offers a Summer Volunteer Program for student and junior volunteers from June to August. Prospective volunteers can apply online and attend an informational session throughout the year to be considered for the program (informational sessions are not held in January). Applications will be accepted until June 1 and volunteer positions will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
South County Hospital offers limited internships in patient care and non-patient care areas.
Students interested in pursuing an internship mustreceive course credit through a college, university, or technical/training program.
Internships typically involve a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week for the course of a semester.

These experiences usually involve a minimum of 10 hours per week in the hospital for the course of a semester.

The Auxiliary, a branch of Volunteer Services, works hard to promote South County Hospital through community fundraising events, including its annual Fashion Show held at the Dunes Club in Narragansett.
Since 1976, The Auxiliary has raised more than $1.5 million for Hospital services and equipment through fundraising events, staffing the Hospital's coffee shop and gift shop, and other special projects.
Some of the improvements made possible with the help of the Auxiliary include:
Updated laboratory equipment
Construction of the Emergency Department's nurses' station
A new wheelchair-accessible WAVE van
A monitoring system for the Emergency Department
Two televisions with DVDs for Ambulatory Care
New furniture for the Center for Women and Newborn Care Unit's waiting area
Cancer Resource rooms for patients
Upgrades to South County Hospital's Intensive Care Unit
Starting January 5, masking will be required for all healthcare workers, patients, and visitors in all patient care areas and high-traffic areas (e.g., lobby and waiting rooms) at South County Hospital and all South County Health locations. This includes Express Care, Lab, Diagnostic Imaging, Primary Care, Center for Women’s Health, and specialty practices.
